Marrakech

September 10th, 2008

Marrakesh is Morocco’s fourth largest city and one of the most popular for tourists. The city was an important pit stop in ancient times for caravan traders bringing and taking goods between Asia and the Middle East.

Being situated on the African continent, like most of Morocco, Marrakech is the product of an interesting blend of Middle Eastern and African cultures, like nowhere else on earth.

To gain an insight into what daily life was like back in the day of camel trains and desert crossings, head to Djemma el Fna, the lively, bustling marketplace in the Medina. For more than 800 years the scene of haggling traders, live performers, social gatherings and snake charmers has existed in pretty much in the current form you can see today.

It is the heart and soul of the city, where the locals come together to buy, sell, eat, drink, be entertained and socialise with one another. Expect to experience a sensory overload, the sights, sounds, colours, smells and flavours are amazing. Don’t forget your camera too!

The Moroccans of Marrakesh are friendly and inquisitive, but also aware of how much money there is to be made from shopping- hungry tourists! Bargaining should be the national sport, and if you want to buy anything at all, you’ll have to participate. Read our tips and techniques in the Get Ready Marrakesh city guide to help you through the process, which can be stressful, annoying, or both for those who have never done it before!!

Another heart-stopping activity you can experience in Marrakesh is hot-air ballooning. It’s a great way to see the surrounding country of Marrakech including the High Atlas Mountain range, lush tropical oases and the start of the Sahara desert.

Many package tours of Marrakesh include a visit to the outer Berber villages, outside the city centre, but you can also organise a day trip from Marrakesh to take you there if you are travelling solo. Tourists are common visitors for the villagers, but you will get to see a way of life that hasn’t changed much in the thousands of years these villages have existed.

You may be wondering what kind of accommodation you might hope to find in an ancient city like Marrakesh, but you will be glad to learn that the city is well designed to handle tourists these days. There is a range of Marrakech accommodation available to choose from.

You may like to choose to stay on one of the many Marrakesh hotels. Or perhaps a bed and breakfast is a little more your style. Whatever you choose Get Ready Marrakesh is the place to go to book the best accommodation, in any budget you may have. You will be surprised how far your dirhams will go when you book online with Get Ready Marrakesh.

Budapest

September 9th, 2008

The capital of Hungary, Budapest, is a beautiful city bursting full of art and culture. It was under Ottoman control for more than 150 years before it flourished during the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Some say Budapest has the strength and allure of three cities in one, because what we know as Budapest today was actually once three separate cities- Buda, Pest and Obuda which developed independently and later unified in 1873. Today the city is famous as one of Europe’s most beautiful, and many of its attractions are inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

As well as the most beautiful, Budapest is famous as the “City of Spas”, thanks to the mineral rich thermal waters found in the region. The hot springs produce mineral rich water that range between 14 and 95 degrees in temperature. As well as a relaxing soak, bathing in these waters is said to be very therapeutic for muscle and joint ailments such as arthritis.

Many of Budapest’s most beautiful and elaborately decorated baths date back as far as the 16th Century, making them a wonderful setting for a luxurious bathing experience. You can choose to experience Budapest’s spas at a private bath in a Budapest Hotel or you can visit one of the many public baths to take advantage of this unique experience.

Another star attraction of Budapest is also thanks to the thermal activity under the city. There are many ancient caves around the city of Budapest which you can explore either alone or on a tour. Not all the caves are open to the public.

In terms of architecture, Budapest is one of Europe’s best destinations. There are many buildings you should try and see, but if you’re short on time, don’t miss the parliament building- its absolutely magnificent. Facing the Danube river, the building is lit up at night so you can’t miss it. There are 690 rooms inside which are elaborately decorated with textiles, furniture and decorative features including gold leaf and statues.

Another must see attraction of Budapest is the city park “Vargosliget”. Located behind the “Hero’s Square”, the city park is the host of many entertainment and tourist venues including the Municipal Zoo, the Szechenyi Thermal Baths, several museums, the Budapest Botanic Gardens and an amusement park. Most interesting is the Budapest circus- the only permanent circus in Europe.

The circus tent is ten meters high and home to a permanent cast of performers, including exotic animals such as white tigers and Indian elephants. The show is a popular entertainment venue for locals and tourists alike.  There are daily performances and two on weekends. A great family activity- don’t miss it!

If you are coming to Hungary with your family, a Budapest hotel probably is not the ideal accommodation. Whilst Budapest accommodation is relatively cheap compared to other major European cities, the best value option for groups or families is to rent an apartment in Budapest.

An apartment gives you privacy, convenience and security. You can run your household as you would at home, which is important, especially for families with younger children.  It is also a very cost effective choice for your accommodation, and allows you to save even more money by cooking at home. This leaves you more money to spend on sight seeing.

Get Ready Budapest has a great range of holiday apartments in Budapest for short term rental. Browse our range of Budapest studio apartments and one and two bedroom family friendly apartments. Our website is also full of information and helpful suggestions on planning your trip to this great destination.

Rome

September 8th, 2008

Roma! The heart of Italy is its capital city. Many tourists who visit Rome say they have not seen it all, and still after two or three Rome holidays they return for more.

It’s not hard to see why the city of Rome is a popular travel destination. It is one of the oldest centres of the modern civilised worlds. The heart of an empire who’s architecture and history reach as far and wide as Turkey and Greece.

With structures such as the Colosseum, St Peter’s Square and the Pantheon are places you must see for yourself at least once in your lifetime. To stand inside the Sistine Chapel and look up at Michelangelo’s masterpiece is an awe-inspiring thing to do.

One thing is true about Rome, if you go during the summer months, expect to queue! Everywhere you want to see, is also on top of the list for thousands of other tourists. Its no wonder it takes two or three visits before you really start to feel like you can tick the highlights off your “must see in Rome” list.

As well as the places you plan to visit, make sure you dedicate some time to researching your Rome accommodation. Would you like to stay in a Rome hotel? Or would renting a Rome apartment be a little more your style?

Hotels are great if you plan to be out and about for the majority of your stay. Someone else does the cleaning for you and you can enjoy a freshly made bed and towels every day.

If you want something a little more relaxed, with added privacy and the option to be able to cook for yourself, you want to rent an apartment in Rome. Rome apartments are a great option for large families who have several people they need to accommodate but don’t have the budget to book out an entire floor of a hotel in Rome!

Dreaming of a Rome vacation? Get Ready Rome is your first stop for cheap accommodation in Rome. We have apartments in Rome and outside the city centre. For all your Rome accommodation needs, have a look through our range of Rome hotels, Rome apartment rentals and Rome apartments.

Prague

September 5th, 2008

Prague is one of Europe’s most beautiful and well preserved cities. Situated on the Vtlave river, the city has been a centre of trade, culture and art throughout it’s history.

Surviving the brutal bombings of World War Two, Prague is today inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, as many of it’s beautiful, historic buildings remain as lovely today as when they were built.

The Town Hall and Church of Our Lady Before Tyn are two beautiful examples of architecture in Prague. The Town Hall was renovated in 1470 to restore many of it’s original Gothic features, but the clock is the original, dating back to the 15th Century. The building is now where the tourist information centre is.

The spires of the Church of our Lady Before Tyn can be seen from anywhere in Prague. What you may not notice however, until close inspection is that they were not built symmetrically. They are supposed to resemble the small but important differences between man and woman.

The most important and impressive building in Prague is the Castle. It began as a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but gradually outer walls and other additions to the church were built, making a complex. Later fortifications were added as the complex was to become a royal residence. Today the castle is where the head of State is seated. The Crown Jewels of Prague are also on display here, but open only to the public once every eight years!!

The city of Prague is a romantic destination and many couples make Prague where they enjoy their honeymoon. Strolling by the river, taking in an Opera or shopping at the Christmas markets- it sounds like the perfect, romantic holiday. To make sure you secure your privacy and enjoy some time alone together, consider booking a Prague apartment.

Apartments in Prague are a relatively inexpensive way to stay in this city. They are generally well equipped and cosily furnished- the ideal setting for some romantic time alone together.

If romance is your thing, you should not miss the chance to walk along the Charles Bridge. This bridge was built in the 14th Century. The bridge connects the old town on Prague with Mala Strana, the historic district around the castle.

As well as extending the city walls, the purpose of building the bridge was also as a tournament ground for knight battles such as jousting.

Planning a Prague vacation? Get ready Prague have the best Prague accommodation including Prague hotels and Prague apartments. Everything you need for the perfect Prague holiday.

We offer cheap accommodation in Prague ranging from budget studio apartments to hotel rooms in Prague.

Munich

September 3rd, 2008

Munich is a much loved European capital and travel hotspot that many visitors come to enjoy year after year. It is not the capital city of Germany (which is Berlin), but rather it is the capital city of Bavaria, a region in today’s Germany that is regarded by many to be culturally distinguished from the other regions of Germany. This belief is especially held by Bavarians themselves, having been an independent state from Germany until as recently as 1871.

Many famous aspects of “German” culture actually originate in Bavaria- lederhosen, the traditional men’s costume, white sausage, a national favourite food, and the Oktoberfest festival, the biggest internationally celebrated festival in the world, are all originally from Bavaria. Not may people know that even the Pope himself (Benedict XVI) is originally from Bavaria!

Munich, as the capital of this region has a lot to be proud of, and it’s probably because of this that many tourists really enjoy visiting the city and its surrounds. There are many activities to occupy your time. Art, history, fine cuisine and some of the prettiest landscape in Germany can be found in Bavaria’s capital. And lets not forget the national favourite- beer!!

As well as cultural complexity, Munich is an especially pretty city. Situated on the banks of the Isar river, and home to the largest and most beautiful city park in Europe, Munich also has many well preserved architectural sights to add to its attractiveness.

From the famous Marienplatz plaza, to the older beer halls like the Haufbrauhaus to the Viktualienmarkt markets, Munich is a great city to just stroll around and feel like you’ve stepped inside a European postcard. If city scenery isn’t what you’re after, your only 1-2 hours away form the stunning Bavarian Alps. Heaven on earth!

If festivals are your thing, you can’t pass up the chance to experience Munich during one of its many celebrations. Oktoberfest is the obvious example. With the beer, the dancing and eating and the drinking, its a festival that celebrates “the finer things in life”.

The first Oktoberfest was actually held in celebration of the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in 1810. But the event evolved to become an annual celebration of all things Bavarian that is enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike.

Other festivals that come to Munich once a year include the Munich Film Festival and the Tollwood summer and winter carnival festivals. Visiting Munich during a festival gives you another insight into local culture which otherwise you would not normally, so if you can manage to come to Munich during an event like these, we highly recommend that you do.

The only consideration you have to allow for is to book your accommodation in Munich well in advance. Munich hotels and many youth hostels will be full almost a year in advance for Oktoberfest! Another choice for accommodation you have is to rent a Munich apartment for short term rental. Apartments in Munich are a great way to experience the city with independence and privacy, freedom to cook and relax at home with your travel companions and also the chance to save money by eating at home.

Get Ready Munich have a great range of affordable and cheap Munich accommodation. Visit our website to see our Munich apartments, Munich hotels and other accommodation options in Munich.

Berlin

September 3rd, 2008

The city of Berlin is the capital of Germany, and the third most visited city in the European Union. Unlike many European capital cities, Berlin is sprawled over a large surface area, making it a great and exciting city to explore, but one that you need to spend some time in to make sure you don’t miss out on all it has to offer.

As well as being a big city with a big history, Berlin has many other “big titles” to its name. For one, it is home to the biggest population of Turkish people in the world, outside Turkey, of course. Being a very multi-cultural city, Berlin is proud to be able to say they make the best Turkish food in Europe, outside of the country itself!

The Berlin zoo is the biggest zoo in the world, in terms of how many species of animals are on display. The Berlin Zoo’s most famous attraction is Knut the polar bear who was born in captivity but rejected by his mother.

The bear captured the attention of the world over his playful personality, amid the controversy of whether humans should have interfered in nursing him and raising him after his mother abandoned him. After spending just over a month in an incubator, Knut was bottle fed and hand reared by his keepers. He still continues to be the Zoo’s most popular attraction, and the first polar bear to be born in Berlin’s zoo in 30 years.

Berlin has many famous museums you can visit during your stay. The popular Check Point Charlie Museum and the remains of the Berlin Wall are two of the busiest and most historically important, where you can learn about Berlin’s history during the war and the effects of dividing the city into East Berlin and West Berlin, until the war was torn down in 1989.

As well as a unique and chaotic history, Berlin has also achieved fame for being a centre of arts, science and research and development, strengths which are reflected in the many museums and galleries you can enjoy during a visit to the German capital.

Getting around Berlin is easy with its integrated network of overland and underground metro system- the U-bahn is the underground metro network, which connects to the S-bahn, or overland system.

Public transport in Berlin is efficient and cost-effective so tourists don’t have to spend a lot of their euros on getting around to see everything inside the city! This also add the advantage for tourists who can choose from any one of many unique suburban areas to stay while they are in the city. If you are renting an apartment in Berlin, you can rest assured no matter where you stay, you will be well connected to the rest of Berlin by its excellent transport system.

Some of the popular areas to find your accommodation in Berlin include the Kurfurstendamm shopping district and the upper-class Charlotenburg area. The Schoenberg neighbourhood is famous for a lively nightlife with plenty of good restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues and an excellent variety of accommodation in Berlin. The Wimersdorf neighbourhood is a popular place to stay for families as it is close to the Tiergarten Park and the Berlin Zoo.

No matter where you plan to stay in Berlin, Get Ready Berlin have some great, affordable holiday apartments for short term rental. Looking for a studio apartment in Berlin? Or a Berlin hotel, we can help you with the perfect Berlin accommodation for your needs.

Amsterdam

August 29th, 2008

Holland- the land of tulips and windmills indeed, but visitors to Amsterdam can tell you with confidence that this city offers so much more then wooden clogs and canals. Amsterdam is a European capital for partying. Add to that a liberal culture that has legalised personal consumption of prostitution and marijuana, and you’ve got one of the liveliest cities in Europe.

Partying aside, Amsterdam also has plenty of cultural drawcards to keep visitors returning for more and more. Art, history and culture can be found all over the city. Learn about World War II and the Nazis persecution of the Jews in Holland at the Anne Frank House, step inside the world of famed, though mad impressionist painter Van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum.

If chilling out is your thing, you can head to the Amsterdam zoo and astronomical museum, or ride a bike along the famous canal banks, soaking up the scenery and marvelling at the houseboats parked in the canals. Near to the city, you’ve got forests and beautiful nature reserves like you would have never imagined.

Add to that a great, eclectic mix of restaurants, bars, shopping districts, antique fairs and a crazy nightlife, packed into a relatively small central city and you’ve got the makings of a great holiday.

Amsterdam might be a little pricier than other European cities, but when you consider all the attractions and sights you can enjoy, we think you will agree it is money worth spent.

We have a great range of budget and luxury Amsterdam apartments for rent in all the best areas of the city centre. Rent an Amsterdam apartment on a canal or in a three story historic house.

If you’re planning an Amsterdam vacation, contact us for your Amsterdam accommodation and travel information.
