Oslo Winter

There's No Way you Should Miss Winter in Oslo, Norway

The winter chill is still in the air in February.  The snow is still deep, but it is beginning to get warm and some places no longer have traces of snow.  Warm by the standards of the Danes is super cold for the rest of the world.  Still, Oslo is magical in winter.

Winter's Best Offers

Some people may think that Oslo winters mean dark and cold days.  They are surprised that the sun shines at least an hour during the months of November and December and three hours on February.  By March the sun shines longer for five hours and it's starting to get a bit warmer.  But the best time to visit Oslo is when there is still snow on the ground and that's when accommodations are cheaper.

The best winter offers are the slashed hotel and apartment rates.  Oslo is inexpensive during winter but the slashed prices do not in any way mean that there's little to do and fewer places to enjoy because of the winter chill.  On the contrary, there's an added bonus for winter tourists who love to ski, want to learn to ski, or just want to experience a winter holiday in ski resorts.

The Northern Lights

Since the nights are long, people look toward the spectacular Northern Lights.  This phenomenon is truly worth an Oslo winter holiday because this is where the night sky shows off the splendor of the Northern Light.

Wine and Beer

Favorite nocturnal adrenalin pumping activities are warming up in the local pubs and feasting on local delights served to go with the wine.  Beer is also served but this is rather pricey and classed into four categories - Class 0, Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3.  The Norwegians prefer pilsner beer though.  If you are a beer drinker, better be ready for expensive beers.

Ski Jump

Now the best of all is the ski jump site in the Holmenkollen.  In winter, this is the Mecca of skiers and in summer, the place gives a breathtaking view of the slopes and the lush woodlands of the Marka area where quaint farmhouses make a good photography and where pubs are ready to serve tourists.

The Holmenkollen Ski Jump is the site for ski competitions.  The tower extends 60 meters way above ground level and 417 meters above sea level.  Any one with the stamina and the daring-do can challenge this ski jump or join tobogganing and cross-country skiing and excursions.  If you have children with you, they can play safely in the snow or sled around.

Aker Brygge

This is an old port which reinvented itself as a tourist stop-over for shopping, dining, watching the latest movies or enjoying the view of the harbor dotted with snow-covered boats.  This is the favorite haunt of the trendy locals and sailors and you guessed it right, in winter with just an hour or three hours of daylight, Aker Brygee is always busy.

Try renting a holiday apartment online for your Oslo winter holiday if you don't want a hotel atmosphere.  The apartment rates are reasonable and there are several apartments for different needs.  You can also choose an apartment in a particular area where you want to savor and discover Oslo - shopping, dining, skiing, exploring museums and parks, or taking smashing photographs of Oslo in winter.
